Data Sets
A data set is a table of reusable test data, with a column for each variable and a row for each set of values. Link one to a test case to supply the case with those values instead of entering data by hand.
This page covers creating a data set, linking one to a test case, what happens when you link more than one, and removing rows and columns.
Create a data set
Section titled “Create a data set”-
In the left navigation, open Data Sets.
-
Click Create in the top right. The Create a Dataset dialog opens.
-
Enter a Name. A Description is optional.
-
Click Create Dataset.
-
On the Data Set details page, enter a distinct variable name in each column header, then enter the values beneath them.
-
Click Add Column for another variable, or Add Row for another set of values.
The data set is now reusable across your test cases.
Create a data set from a test case
Section titled “Create a data set from a test case”-
In the left navigation, open Test Cases, then create or open a test case.
-
On the Test Case details page, go to the Data Set section and click Create Dataset.
-
Enter a Name, optionally a Description, and click Create Dataset. The Create a Data Set dialog opens.
-
Enter a distinct variable name in each column header, then enter the values beneath them.
-
Click Add Column for another variable, or Add Row for another set of values.
-
Click Link Dataset.
Add a data set to a test case
Section titled “Add a data set to a test case”-
In the left navigation, open Test Cases, then create or open a test case.
-
On the Test Case details page, go to the Data Set section and click Add Data Set. The Add Data Set dialog opens.
-
Select a data set from the list and click Next.
-
Select the rows whose values you want the test case to use, or select all of them.
-
Click Add Data Set.
Link more than one data set
Section titled “Link more than one data set”Repeat the steps above to link a second data set. Arcus then combines them by Cartesian product, generating one test scenario for every combination of rows across the linked data sets.
Suppose Dataset A holds names and countries:
| Name | Age | Country |
|---|---|---|
| Alice | 30 | India |
| Bob | 25 | Japan |
And Dataset B holds plans:
| Plan | Price | Currency |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | 10 | USD |
| Free | 0 | INR |
| Enterprise | 50 | JPY |
Linking both produces 6 test scenarios, one per combination:
| Name | Age | Country | Plan | Price | Currency |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alice | 30 | India | Pro | 10 | USD |
| Alice | 30 | India | Free | 0 | INR |
| Alice | 30 | India | Enterprise | 50 | JPY |
| Bob | 25 | Japan | Pro | 10 | USD |
| Bob | 25 | Japan | Free | 0 | INR |
| Bob | 25 | Japan | Enterprise | 50 | JPY |
Remove a row or column
Section titled “Remove a row or column”-
In the left navigation, open Data Sets, then open the data set.
-
Hover over the row, or over the column header.
-
Click the ellipsis icon (⋯) at the start of the row or column.
-
Click Remove Row or Remove Column.
