Considering the above components step definition file contains the implementations that are written in JUnit and Selenium or other testing frameworks. The cucumber processor internally calls the step definition code to execute the testing commands. Hence Cucumber uses JUnit to implement the scenarios, execute them on the browser or to call specific methods, and assert the expected and actual values. Finally, mark the test as pass or fail.

Cucumber can use JUnit, but is not limited to it. Other tools like Selenium, Ruby on Rails, Watir etc can also be used with Cucumber.
