Testers have to disagree, debate, and sometimes even fight with their teammates to roll out a high-quality product. For the most part, a tester&#8217;s job is to find faults in others&#8217; work. Despite their best efforts to be diplomatic and tactful, testers may find themselves in a conflict. As a result, testers may have strained relationships with their teammates.&nbsp;



This article will discuss a helpful reasoning tool called Hanlon&#8217;s razor from the perspective of a tester. You will learn how to apply it in your day-to-day life to navigate through stressful situations and improve your workplace relationship.

A philosophy razor is a heuristic or a rule of thumb that allows you to eliminate or shave off unlikely explanations for a problem. Hanlon’s razor says, “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”&nbsp;&nbsp;



Don’t assume the person responsible is malicious if something wrong happens because they might just be stupid! Different people have stated this principle throughout history in various forms. However, Hanlon&#8217;s razor is attributed to&nbsp; Robert J. Hanlon, who shared it in a book containing a compilation of jokes in 1980.



In a broader sense, Hanlon&#8217;s razor says that you should not assume that people acted out of a desire to cause harm if there is a reasonable alternative explanation. The alternative experience can be Stupidity, Ignorance, Carelessness, Incompetence, Lack of Information, etc.

Many relationships deteriorate as a result of wrong assumptions. When things do not turn out the way we want, we tend to assume the worst. In our heads, we make up stories that reflect our beliefs. Our natural tendency is to assume that others are ill-intentioned. Hanlon&#8217;s razor is a powerful mental model that can be applied to any situation where our first instinct is a negative assumption. Consider the following scenario.

Furthermore, it saves you from unnecessary mental distress. When you fail to apply Hanlon&#8217;s razor, you may waste your time and energy by focusing on the wrong things.&nbsp;



Testers often work in high-pressure situations like late-night releases, fire-fighting in case of production issues, tight schedules, unclear and changing requirements, etc. Overthinking can develop as a result of stress and anxiety.

Despite the limitations, Hanlon&#8217;s Razor can be a useful starting point in most situations, for a tester, as it eases cognitive overload. Because not assuming the worst helps you to think clearly and rationally.

Why Testers Should Embrace Hanlon’s Razor

In this fast-paced market, it’s very hard to find the right talent. Even the expectations from the employers are pretty high in some cases. But here, various components play a role. Hiring managers should have a clear view of the open roles. The job description should clearly explain the mandatory/preferable skills.&nbsp;



Recently I had an experience, and one of the candidates during the interview said to me that I am a good interviewer. She also added that she had bitter experiences before. I was pondering over the same statement for a few days, and I realized that few of us are not doing justice to the role of “Interviewer”. Being an interviewer is hard, I agree. Keep in mind that this is an acquired skill. 



Based on my personal experience over the years, I thought of sharing a few tips for our community. I always believe the interview should be an interesting conversation between the candidate and the interview panel. We should try to understand more about the candidate, their skillset (what sort of tool and technologies they worked on), strengths, communication and listening skills, etc.&nbsp;



The expectations for the QA role have grown to a greater level. Few organizations genuinely look for the right candidates with the right level of expectation. But the other few organizations expect the Testers to do an all-rounder job in the project. It’s fine unless we get the remuneration equivalent to it, LoL.&nbsp;

Try to understand the project/domain knowledge of the candidate. Think about the ways their previous experience is going to bring value to the current role you are looking for. Please don’t assume.&nbsp;

Nowadays Testers are very versatile. So try to understand their experience with different flavors of Testing. Based on their knowledge of tools/technology, try to pose your questions.&nbsp;







<h3 id="3-be-there-on-time">3. Be there on time</h3>



It’s always good to start the interviews a bit early to avoid some technical or unexpected difficulties. Even if you join early, and if the candidate is also joining then initiate a casual conversation to make them comfortable. Bad things happen, it’s unavoidable, sometimes we cannot make it on time. In that case, apologize for being late, and try to engage in the current conversation.&nbsp;



<h3 id="4-make-yourself-available-no-distractions">4. Make yourself available (no distractions)</h3>



As an interviewer, you should be all ears. Sometimes, this helps you to build further questions to understand the technical knowledge of the candidate. So, turn on the DND mode wherever necessary.

In this digital era, with the help of every available technology, the world has gotten smaller. So for virtual interviews &#8211; along with the candidates, interviewers should also have their cameras on. Without this, the candidate would feel like they are talking to pictures.&nbsp;



<h2 id="during-the-interview">During the Interview:</h2>



Remember that you are the face of your organization. The person who applied for this role will treat you as a representative of your organization.

<h3 id="1-meet-and-greet">1. Meet and Greet:</h3>



Once you kick off the interview officially, first greet them. Introduce yourself, a bit about your team, the current projects you are working on and you can add about the Testing experts available in your team/organization. Also, explain the process of the interview. 



For instance, the introduction part, the Technical theory questions, a few exercises/Hands-on, Q&amp;A (if the candidate has any questions), and wrap-off. By explaining this, the candidate will have better clarity and be prepared. If there’s another interviewer as well, ask them to give a brief introduction. Please don’t have too many people as watchers during the interview.&nbsp;



If you sense that the candidate is a bit edgy, make sure to have a casual conversation to calm them down. Go easy on them.



<h3 id="2-ask-them-to-introduce">2. Ask them to introduce</h3>



Once your introduction and process explanations are over, ask the candidate to give a brief introduction about their current role and project. Mostly their resume states everything, so this part should be kept short and crisp. My tip here would be to ask them to rate their top three skill sets. This helps us to proceed further with the technical evaluation.&nbsp;



<h3 id="3-categorize-the-questions">3. Categorize the questions</h3>



Instead of simply shooting the questions one by one, try to categorize them. For instance &#8211; Section 1: Testing Fundamentals, Section 2: Testing Artifacts, Section 3: Automation Skills, Section 4: Tools/Technologies, Section 5: Problem-solving skills, Section 6: Programming Language knowledge, and so on. Tweak these categories based on your organization&#8217;s needs. This helps to capture the detailed feedback as well.



<h3 id="4-perception-of-asking-questions">4. Perception of asking questions:</h3>



If you have a clear objective on the expectation for this role, try to understand if the candidate is having experience with the same tool/technology. Say, for instance, if you are looking for a candidate with AWS experience, check if they have similar cloud platform experience. 



They might have worked with Azure, if the cloud basics are strong they could scale up in AWS in weeks. Now, your questions should be more focused on the cloud basics, cloud-based testing skills, etc.&nbsp;



My pro tip: Don’t expect the candidate to have hands-on every time with your tool requirement. Software Testers can learn and adapt any tool faster than anyone.&nbsp;



If you are hiring for Test lead or similar leadership roles, try to analyze the leadership skills through behavioral and situation-based questions.&nbsp;



<h3 id="5-focus-on-automation-and-other-special-skill-sets">5. Focus on Automation and other special skill sets:</h3>



If you are expecting Selenium expertise, and the candidate doesn’t have that don’t judge too quickly. Get to understand more about their <a href="https://testsigma.com/blog/different-types-of-tools-to-help-testers-day-to-day-life-easier/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">knowledge of tools</a> or which they are using for Automation. Who knows, we might switch from Selenium to another tool later. 



Or we might prefer any low code/no-code automation tool. In this situation, try to understand the Automation knowledge of the candidate. They should be aware of that when we should do Test Automation, and when not. Check if they are good with Automation concepts, jargon, etc.&nbsp;



<h3 id="6-cover-the-skills-stated-in-the-resume-but-not-required-for-the-current-role">6. Cover the skills stated in the resume but not required for the current role:</h3>



For instance, if the candidate mentioned that Performance Testing is also one of the strong skill sets, but you are not performing any performance tests right now in your project. In this case, try to validate their knowledge. 



Get to know the tools they used. In the future, your applications might require performance testing. This is why we need to come prepared for the interview. If you are not experienced in performance testing, you can ask other interviewers to check that specific skill. That’s an advantage of having multiple interviewers.&nbsp;



<h3 id="7-ensuring-the-confidential-information-is-not-leaked">7. Ensuring the Confidential information is not leaked:</h3>



Sharing information related to clients could be harmful, so better try to avoid such details. Also, any organization-related information shouldn’t be shared while conversing with the candidate.&nbsp;



<h3 id="8-be-empathetic">8. Be empathetic:</h3>



Kindness doesn’t cost a thing. We are not sure what the candidate is going through. So try to be patient.&nbsp;

Once done with all the questions, check if the candidate is having any questions for you. Set the expectations for the next steps and time frames. Don’t forget to thank the candidate for their time.&nbsp;

Once the interview is done, it’s time to provide feedback. Think about various factors before deciding on them. If there are multiple interviewers along with you in the interview panel, try reaching them and discuss the candidate&#8217;s performance. Few instances, if the interviewers are located across different time zones or teams, then every interviewer can send individual feedback about the candidate.



Now, based on the answers, assess the degree to which each candidate possesses and/or demonstrates meeting the expectations, and categorize them accordingly.

Everybody wants to build something; it feels incredible creating a piece of software or a fantastic application. Still, when we make something for ourselves, we expect some Quality work, even perfection. As Vonnegut Jr mentioned in his quote, another flaw in the human character is that everybody wants to build, and nobody wants to do maintenance. The same applies to software development and the high cost of Quality and Maintenance.

In my experience, I&#8217;ve seen several startups trying to deliver their Minimal Value Product (MVP) faster. Still, it becomes a nightmare when they try to implement a Quality process later, or even worse, postponing some critical features because some complex bugs are found. So my suggestion for those starting a new project or a new application is that you must consider quality earlier; perhaps later, it could be costly.



<h2 id="we-all-have-qa-responsibilities">We all Have QA responsibilities.</h2>



Indeed, we all have QA responsibilities, and sometimes it is worth repeating it out loud.



There are moments in our software development life cycle when we are perfectly aware of what we are building and have some idea of what we need to validate, exactly when and where we need it the most. Still, there is a sort of uncertainty if we are validating correctly. It should maintain a balance between what we are building and what we are validating. Everything must be working perfectly.



But then there are circumstances when we are almost totally blind about our actual capabilities and strengths related to quality. Our quality mindset is literally on vacation. Although the teams understand why quality assurance is needed, still, some guidance is required; we feel that everything is off track. It is relatively easy to lose track in this new world where everyone is responsible for Quality, and none is responsible for that.



Don&#8217;t get me wrong; every person within the Agile teams has to consider Quality at every stage in our projects. However, a group of people cannot just own it (As the role of Tester/QA Engineer doesn&#8217;t exist anymore in some companies.), nowadays, in this new era of the world without QA Engineers, who should be the ones helping us to embrace Quality as a core value and encouraging us to follow best QA practices?

The good news is that most organizations understand why quality assurance is still needed. They fill the gap using the developers and DevOps staff playing an even more active role in QA operations. I have seen those teams working more closely. Being Curious:



 <blockquote class="wp-block-quote">“Curiosity is a willing, a proud, an eager confession of ignorance” ― S. Leonard Rubinstein</blockquote> 



Curiosity helps to stay energetic and which in turn helps you to perform efficient testing. This curiosity will motivate you to do better and better every day. You will try to understand more about the application/flow. You could also start exploring the features of the application to be tested. 



You will try to learn new things, which could land you up in learning new tools/technologies in Testing. This helps to stay on top of things. You will be curious about the latest trends in the Testing space, and you will be up-to-date. If you are keen and curious, you will listen to your team even when you have a strong knowledge/expertise around that area/topic.



If you are landing in a new role/new project, you need to be curious to know what’s happening. Only then you will ask the right questions and you can proceed on the right path. Sooner you can settle as one of the good testers on the team.&nbsp;



In a nutshell, this curious feeling in you will bring out the best “Tester” version of yourself.&nbsp;



Empathetic:

Empathy is the ability to understand others&#8217; feelings. Once we are open and put ourselves in others&#8217; shoes, we can connect easily with the people around us. We, as Testers, need to work with multiple stakeholders. Not everyone is the same. So before concluding things, try to understand the situation of the opponent and react. Don’t conclude hastily.&nbsp;



For instance, if a developer is rejecting a defect try to talk with him and gather more knowledge. Simply judging him and being stubborn that this defect is valid, is not helpful. We need to reach out to different stakeholders if still things are not working as expected.&nbsp;



If any of your team members are having a hard time, we should help them voluntarily. Sometimes even not disturbing them will also be a great help. So try to be polite with everyone.&nbsp;



Admitting the mistakes:



 <blockquote class="wp-block-quote">“Apology is not about saying I&#8217;m sorry, but it is about the meaning you put behind the apology and admitting that you are the wrong part.” ― Unarine Ramaru</blockquote> 



Learn from your mistakes. But admitting the mistakes to others requires a lot more gut. We cannot be right all the time.&nbsp;



We as Testers should be strong-headed and able to admit our mistakes and try not to repeat them. No one is perfect, we might miss some details while logging a defect. If other stakeholders are inquiring, agree that you missed it and try to create a checklist in the future so that no one in our team is making the same mistake again. If you are stubborn in not admitting that you did that by mistake, you will never think of the best practices to avoid that in the future.&nbsp;



Even as a Leader/Manager, while we are admitting our mistakes we set an example to our team. This doesn’t mean that the leaders are always right. At the same time, we are working towards a single goal “Quality”, and anyone that is getting deviated from the track can be pulled back with the right mindset.



Humbleness:



 <blockquote class="wp-block-quote">&#8220;Be humble, don&#8217;t have too much pride, and think you&#8217;re too good for anything.” ― Angela Yee.</blockquote> 



Humbleness is a quality of being modest or unpretentious. When you are humble, you will have better visibility over the things around you. Most of the time, pride will make you blind. This will cause a great loss of knowledge/wisdom. But when we are humble we will be open to learning new things from different people. We will have something to learn from everyone. So being humble is helpful to us in many ways.&nbsp;



We have a lot to learn from our fellow testers and developers. Being humble helps you to learn new things. When you think that you are already mastering a tool/technology and believe that you know everything about it, this attitude blocks you from learning new things. But at the same time, when you think that, I am good at this tool/topic, let me try to learn what I am still lacking. 



I was once working for a developer who is very humble and he taught me many things. We were testing the mobile app, he used to explain how he is generating every build and what are the tools/apps he is using. That gave me a clear picture of my testing process, and for some bug, I could easily find the root cause. Here, if I would have been so stubborn thinking that I know everything, I might have lost some special learning from him.&nbsp;



This mode will help you to be receptive and you will learn more and unlearn the biasing you had.&nbsp;



Asking questions to understand other&#8217;s opinion:

Blindly judging people or shutting them down is going to be a loss for you. We should learn to listen to people. Once hearing their side of the story will always be a wise choice. Being a Team Leader doesn’t mean that you know about everything. Whenever there is a discussion coming up, we should be able to ask questions and understand what others think. 



We shouldn’t start the conversion in defensive mode. Because going defensive will hide you from seeing the truth. During the team meeting, if there’s a conflict on the decision, try to think and analyze the different solutions provided by the team. Instead of trying to prove them wrong, ask questions and understand how efficient the solution is. This will help to build a good team rapport, and everyone in the team will feel that they are valued.&nbsp;



Open to new ideas:

Everyone in the team works from a different set of backgrounds. When there is a problem statement, interact more with the team, talk to the business, and do constant research. Most of the time, complex problems will have simpler solutions. For a single solution, we might receive different ideas from different people. Always do a brainstorm and come up with the best solution. We should have an open mind and heart to invite all the silly, stupid and crazy options as well.

However, this is one of the most common misconceptions. Automation is defined by Wikipedia as a wide range of technologies that reduce human involvement in processes. It is often the execution of tests that consumes the largest portion of the overall testing phase. Automating this phase can certainly save a great deal of time.&nbsp;

Once you understand the What, Where, Who, Why, and When, the most important question is HOW to start with the Open Source World?



Here are a few starting steps and checkpoints that will assist you in getting started with Open-Source:



<ul><li> Learn and get familiar with Git and Github:</li><li>Identify your Contribution Opportunity: As we discussed earlier, everyone has an opportunity to contribute. They can be seen under two major categories: a. Coding Contributions: This will include contributions that would require you to work on the source code. This might be something you should take a look at if you are good at programming. You can contribute towards: i. Product Features ii. Bug Fixes iii. Scripts for Unit Tests, CI-CD, etc. b. Non-Coding Contributions: You don’t always need programming experience to contribute. One of my first contributions was adding documentation and reporting bugs. It was greatly appreciated and gave me the confidence to work more towards open source. If you&#8217;re a first-timer or not sure where to begin, you can always contribute towards: i. Documentation ii. Guides iii. Raising Issues, Retest them, Providing feedback, etc. </li><li>Typical Flow for Contributing: i. Learn about the existing implementation ii. Modify / Add Something iii. Get it Reviewed, Send a Pull Request iv. Get Feedback</li></ul>



Positive feedback will most likely result in your Pull Request being accepted. Otherwise, you will most likely receive comments for improvement. Eventually, once your pull request has been reviewed and accepted, you have made your first contribution.



<ul><li>Take Initiative: You don’t have to always wait for someone to guide you on where to start. You can take initiatives and contribute to: i. New Features ii. Bug Fixes iii. Updates to Existing Features</li></ul>

Agile teams are constantly asked to do more with less and release faster without sacrificing the quality or increased spending. As a result, many Agile teams look to test automation to meet these demands from internal clients and end-users.



But, as we already know, traditional test automation comes with its fair share of challenges.



Many companies have invested a lot of time and resources into automation and those further behind in their automation maturity and strategy. As part of the current state of test automation, many companies have minimal levels of test automation today, mentioning that the reason for that is they don&#8217;t have the necessary resources to support it. One reason is a lack of skilled and/or experienced test automation resources.



Agile Teams that have achieved higher levels of test automation encounter a much more diverse group of challenges. For example, companies that have invested heavily in Test Automation believe they progress too slowly, and do not notice the expected level of coverage from it.



The challenges appear to be inhibiting the effectiveness and adoption of Test Automation. According to Forrester&#8217;s State of Agile reports, the percentage of automated test cases is barely growing. In 2015, <a href="https://www.slideshare.net/ApplauseMarketing/automate-qa-testing-easily-with-codeless-tools#10" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">49% of respondents</a> communicated they always tested manually. That number dropped to 46% in the 2017 version of the report but hit a plateau in 2019, where it remained at 46%.



<h2 id="no-code-testing-tools-helping-agile-teams">No-code testing tools helping Agile Teams</h2>



As we are aware, traditional automation requires experts in coding to script tests at the outset and maintain them over time. In addition, the complexity and need for different tools for automation like Appium, Selenium, element locator, locator strategies, and so on add to the complexity of traditional Test Automation and the need for specific expertise.&nbsp;<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>



Some companies are misleading the QA teams and moving into development roles, which usually indicates that test automation projects get stuck midway through and are not fully completed, resulting in a massive waste of time, money, and people.



The value of no-code/low-code test automation tools, on the other hand, is that anyone can do it. With a no-code/low-code solution, a user moves through a test case, and the testing tools can transcribe that experience into an automation script. In addition, no-code/low-code testing tools were initially addressed only for web applications.&nbsp;

Today, many more tools offer the ability to run sessions and create test automation scripts on mobile (Android and iOS), API Testing, and some functional testing areas.



Although developing with no-code often accelerates the development process and enables more straightforward enhancements, DevOps teams should still perform testing and configuration reviews.



Using a no-code testing platform, we can significantly reduce the time and cost involved while also decreasing our dependence on test automation engineers. In addition, regular coders and even non-coders can now generate test scripts.



Finally, Testers can now focus on the business needs of the software, ensure customer-centric scenarios, and perhaps more test coverage.



Ideally, traditional automation and no-code testing tools should maximize the speed and quality of software delivered to end-users.



Still, I genuinely believe modern automation should use no-code testing and deliver high-quality applications faster.



<h2 id="the-future-of-agile-teams-and-no-code-automation-testing-tools">The Future of Agile Teams and no-code automation testing tools</h2>



Technology is constantly changing, but at this moment, there are no tools to build software tests that perfectly run and identify bugs automatically with a single click. However, we can&#8217;t deny that it&#8217;s easier than ever to run automated software tests faster with no-code automation tools using advanced AI and ML techniques.

Agile Testing approaches that we need to include in our Scrum Teams:



<h3 id="user-acceptance-testing">User Acceptance Testing</h3>



Agile brought user acceptance testing into all stages of the software development process. Proper user acceptance testing goes beyond asking business stakeholders to explore the application, try out new features, and find issues. Instead, a successful UAT requires thorough planning and execution, just like any other test.



Keeping UAT in sync with specifications is challenging in Agile projects where changes happen frequently. In addition, due to its heavy focus on end-user Testing, UAT also overlaps with UI testing, which tends to be less change-proof.&nbsp;



One of the critical advantages of no-code/low-code testing tools is the speed you can create and edit tests. In addition, the speed boost you get from not having to code your tests makes it possible to cover new features with tests quickly.



<h3 id="exploratory-testing-in-agile">Exploratory Testing in Agile</h3>



Exploratory Testing is a cyclical method, progressing from design &gt; execution &gt; analysis &gt; learning before beginning the loop again. As we already know, Exploratory Testing can&#8217;t be automated; instead, Agile testers must create the exploratory testing session on the go, requiring the tester to use their unique skill set fully.

Exploratory Testing is the closest testers get to interact with an application. It&#8217;s a great way to find out if you have some working application quickly, and allow testers to identify bugs that would not be found through other testing methodologies. BDD is a collaborative approach that creates a shared understanding of requirements between the business and the Agile teams. Its purpose is to help guide development, reduce rework, and increase flow. BDD tests are customer-facing scenarios that try to describe the behavior of a Story, Feature, or Capability from a user&#8217;s perspective.&nbsp;



BDD facilitates the shift from functional Testing to automated Testing thanks to an understandable language that eliminates complex test script syntax (TDD).

Including Product Owners, TPMs, QA Managers, stakeholders, etc. It means any team member can look at the test cases and review them if needed.



In today&#8217;s Agile world, we can recognize teams who don&#8217;t want to use no-code/low-code automation tools and other groups willing to learn about those tools and apply them in their scrum teams.



A few years ago, I witnessed the same pattern between people who knew how to use Agile methodologies and those reluctant to switch from waterfall methodology (<a href="https://hbr.org/2019/09/when-waterfall-principles-sneak-back-into-agile-workflows" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">AgileFall</a>).



<h2 id="final-thoughts">Final Thoughts</h2>



The greatest thing that can be done to ensure the success of <a href="https://testsigma.com/blog/the-unpleasant-phenomenon-in-agile-testing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Agile Testing</a> for an application is to hire people who have the essential characteristics of an Agile tester and build a culture of self-organization and independent thinking in the entire organization.



Members of an Agile team need to learn and adapt different technologies and business practices in today&#8217;s Agile world. In addition, they need to know new tools and skills to be more productive and successful.



Agile testers must possess vast knowledge in different areas such as technical-based skillset, communication skills, collaboration with others effortlessly, experience in exploratory testing, and familiarity with various non-code/low code automation testing tools.



Last but not least, modern Agile Teams need to embrace a quality mindset. Therefore, we need to maintain &#8220;Quality&#8221; as a core value and take real advantage of the no-code/low-code automation testing tools to deliver high-quality applications faster.

What we’re trying to do at <a href="https://testsigma.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Testsigma</a> is not just simplify test automation to speed up the testing, but also make it a sustainable, scalable process in which the tools and frameworks don’t require ongoing maintenance, freeing up the teams to focus on value delivery instead of building and maintaining scripts and frameworks.

<h2 id="the-current-test-stack-is-broken-needs-a-fresh-approach">The current test stack is broken &amp; needs a fresh approach</h2>



Our founding team has been part of multiple product teams for various organizations, with each one of us being part of product teams for around 15 years. We have seen test automation problems first hand many times and helped the teams build scalable test automation processes.



In that time we’ve primarily seen two types of test automation approaches implemented, both being imperfect:



1. Custom built frameworks



Most teams prefer building a custom test stack/framework because of the flexibility but there are significant drawbacks:



i. We realized that the modern test stack is fragmented. It has too many moving parts to be easy to set up and scale.



ii. Given there are so many use cases, languages and app types, test automation becomes overwhelmingly complex &amp; time consuming to the point where it becomes its own development project.



2. Scriptless tools powered by AI



Modern tools are simple to begin with but don’t scale for complex setups and constantly evolving applications.



It became clear to us that simple, no-code, AI powered solutions are vendor dependent in terms of flexibility required for scale, whereas custom built solutions require intensive complex dev and integration efforts to both build and maintain over time. As a consequence, <a href="https://www.capgemini.com/in-en/insights/research-library/world-quality-report-wqr-20-21/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">almost two-thirds of all teams</a> that automate their testing never see a return on their investment.



In a nutshell, the current test stack is complex, time consuming to build, and just doesn’t scale like you would want it to.



We want to change that by standardizing the fragmented test stack and coalescing it into an easy-to-use platform that combines the flexibility of open source test automation tools but with the ease of existing closed source low-code solutions.



<h2 id="bringing-standardization-to-a-fragmented-testing-toolchain">Bringing standardization to a fragmented testing toolchain</h2>



We now know the problem lies with the lack of a common standard in the testing ecosystem. So how do we stop test automation from becoming a complex parallel development project?&nbsp; When we set out to build Testsigma we laid out 3 core principles the platform should achieve:

What we’re trying to do is not just simplify test automation but bring sustainable scalability that can help users and teams actually do more testing rather than being caught up with building and maintaining scripts and frameworks.



<h2 id="building-a-unified-testing-ecosystem">Building a unified testing ecosystem</h2>



To really solve for the broken test stack, we had to make sure our platform doesn’t limit users to specific use cases, programming languages, application types etc.&nbsp;



We decided to bring everything under one roof and built Testsigma as an open-source, low code platform that mimics what the modern Test automation workflow looks like.



Our platform works out-of-the-box. You don’t have to ‘set it up’ one framework, library, and tool at a time. You can simply install it and directly start automating tests for web apps, mobile apps, and APIs. This enables teams to shift focus towards scaling testing rather than maintaining the automation framework to support it.



From test development to reporting, users can perform integrated end-to-end testing that&#8217;s supplemented by powerful TestOps, built-in test data management and one-click integrations with delivery pipelines, for web apps, Android and iOS apps, and APIs, etc.

<h2 id="effortless-extensibility">Effortless extensibility</h2>



We have seen that after teams automate a number of ‘standard’ tests, they struggle to scale because test scenarios increase in number and complexity while release cycles shortened. It&#8217;s no secret that test automation requirements are unique to every organization and constantly change&nbsp; based on the product &amp; what stage it is at. Test automation requirements can start out small and then grow rapidly.



We wanted to make scalability and extensibility something that was accessible and easy.



Testsigma&#8217;s platform approach will enable everyone to easily add custom actions, data generators, reports, integrations etc. form a community powered marketplace and build all these as needed using a simple Testsigma SDK.&nbsp;



Also, we are an open source platform, you can dig deep and extend the core platform as you need.



<h2 id="no-code-testing-that-s-not-just-record-and-playback">No-code testing that’s not just record and playback</h2>



In cross-functional development teams, <a href="https://testsigma.com/blog/test-automation-by-smes-qa-analysts-for-continuous-delivery-and-devops/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">everyone including Devs, QAs, PMs are responsible</a> for the quality of releases. To balance quality with release velocity, we see teams adopting <a href="https://testsigma.com/blog/how-continuous-testing-supercharges-your-automation-testing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shift-left continuous testing</a>. 



We built Testsigma as a platform that everyone in the team could use to plan, develop, execute, and analyze tests, but the traditional ‘record-and-playback’ approach to to test development left a lot of room for flakiness and browser compatibility issues to creep in.



To create tests in Testsigma all you need to know is simple English. You can either write tests step by step, or generate them by recording real-time user scenarios and interactions that are auto-converted into editable tests.&nbsp;



<h2 id="why-open-source">Why Open Source?</h2>



Our objective is to collaboratively build a future-ready test automation platform, an ‘operating system for software quality’ alongside its most important stakeholders – the user, that decisively bridges the gap between development and testing.



In our journey so far, we’ve noticed that there is a misalignment across quality, teams and tools. There isn&#8217;t a tool in the market that involves every quality stakeholder, technical or not, in the building and integration of a test automation framework within the SDLC. We think that by open sourcing our platform, we can bring SDETs, Test Engineers, and Test Automation architects on the same page as QAs, PMs, and SMEs.

Valentine’s day is a day to express your love to the other person 💞. You need not explicitly do this through words. Showing gratitude, care or making them comfortable all are signs of expressing love. 



But is it the same with people doing jobs together?



Relationships other than romantic ones often overlook this aspect of work that keeps people happy and make them stay for long &#8211; just like what happens in a relationship.&nbsp;



One such relationship is of testers with their reporting managers. A happy tester-manager relationship shows a direct positive effect on work quality. A happy tester stays in the company for long and provides valuable contributions constantly.



On a similar note, this valentine’s day, I have drafted a few points to strengthen your relationship and analyze areas to give special attention to.

<h2 id="eliminate-the-nervousness">Eliminate the nervousness</h2>



The initial part of any relationship begins with nervous individuals (like a newly joined tester). Unlike a romantic date, here one person – the manager, has a higher position and might have spent years dealing with new joiners. In any case, it is a new environment for the tester while the manager is already in his comfortable space. The nervousness, therefore, is only associated with the tester who just joined the organization and everyone is new to him.&nbsp;

Here is the chance to eliminate a tester’s nervousness. Ask questions that allows him to open up and be comfortable around you. These questions can be either of his past work for which he can speak freely or just general questions. Once the tester gets comfortable, you’d be able to sense the confidence in his inputs.



<h2 id="make-tester-comfortable-in-the-team">Make tester comfortable in the team</h2>



The next phase of your relationship kicks in when the tester is all settled and is ready to contribute to the software quality work. This is an important part of your relationship as an initial impression of the work culture can impact his contribution and output directly.



The best way to make your tester feel comfortable is to start by asking your development team to have a unified working mindset. If there are bugs, consider them legitimate and appreciate the work. Sometimes development team do not get along with testers due to their opposite approach towards software development.



One thinks that the software is working and when bugs arise, a lot of the time developers are quick to say, “Well, it works on my machine!”.

A tester should also be given ample time to perform his responsibilities. Bombarding the project a day before the release for testing and delivering is not a good approach to make your tester feel important and loved with your team.



On the contrary, it can make him stressed affecting the quality of work. A better way is to ask your tester how much time does he need to complete XYZ? Or in 2 days, how much can you complete? Consider all the phases of testing before setting any deadline such as verifying the bugs etc. Changing your approach with a small variation starting this valentine&#8217;s day can mean a lot to the tester.&nbsp;



<h2 id="involve-testers-as-much-as-possible">Involve testers as much as possible</h2>



Involvement directly shows how much you care about the person you are involving. The same feeling is experienced by the other side also. Unfortunately, sometimes testers might be left out in some areas where the manager thinks their work is different from what the discussion is about.&nbsp;



Involving the tester in sprints for better <a href="https://testsigma.com/ebook/in-sprint-test-automation-simplified" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">in-sprint testing</a> will make them understand the current release-ready product. It will involve them in the development process that is always considered a good practice. Making them work on a version that has already been released can bring their morale down.



To strengthen your relationship, ask the tester to give as much input as possible. What do you think about this? Do you see any flaws in the planning? etc. This can make him feel important to the team and loved by the teammates.



<h2 id="respect-their-way-of-working">Respect their way of working</h2>



Each person has a different way of working things and I&#8217;m sure your tester will have his/her way too. Unless he is a fresher, he might have failed repeatedly and settled on a methodology that he would have found successful and efficient. This may or may not be the way in which you or your team works. Let’s start by respecting the methodology rather than imposing our own on the tester.

In addition, you should not only let him work his way but understand what his methodologies are. Maybe it is better and more efficient than how you currently work and you may like it. Even if you don’t, it will help in planning for future activities with respect to the way of work.&nbsp;



<h2 id="provide-support">Provide support</h2>



A good relationship always expects that people support each other in hardships and acknowledge prosperity. The same implies to a tester and manager relationship. There cannot be defined parameters for this section though. For instance, support may extend when the tester has delayed in delivering the tasks on time. Or answering a small (or silly) question patiently and in detail just like answering any other question.

A new tester may need more support from his manager as he is constantly figuring out different things about the organisation. Being readily available over chat or email (especially in work from home arrangements) is the best thing you could start doing from this day!

The final thing you need to keep in mind to always maintain your relationship strong is surprising your tester frequently. Acknowledging someone for their work motivates people to do more. Not only this, they feel more comfortable and friendlier around you which is a sign of a growing relationship. Just like in a romantic relationship, surprising with <a href="https://testsigma.com/blog/what-to-gift-your-software-tester-friend-if-you-were-the-secret-santa/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">gifts</a> also keeps your relationship healthier and the tester (or any employee) would feel valuable in the company. This increases retention and gives a bond with the employee for life.
