<p>As we near the end of 2023, I sit back and reflect on it. It went pretty fast like every other year 🙂</p>

<p>2022 was a super busy year with many talks, blogs, and workshops. This year, I had to focus on multiple things and upskilling. So I had to invest time in learning, reading, spending quality time with my family, focusing on my health, etc. I love writing, and it&#8217;s always been my favorite space. I wrote many blogs this year too.</p>



<p>When I think about 2023, I can&#8217;t help but wonder about the beginning and the twists and turns that happened. This year is not just about testing, another year of learnings, failures, travels, giving back to the community, blogs, and so on. And yes, my love for API still grows, it will never fade.</p>

<p>It might be a bit boring listing down my achievements, but this is not about bragging (maybe a little 😁) It is my self-reflection, and many pleasant memories surfaced while writing this blog. I hope the tales below inspire you rather than annoy you 😊</p>

<p>I am proud of many of my achievements, the most notable of which is that I traveled to the United States and presented at the Agile Testing Days conference. The audience loved my workshop, it&#8217;s about API Testing. I took my family along, and they were so proud of me and yes we had a wonderful holiday after the conference. The United States was always my dream, and when I got through the paper selection, I was most excited and glad I could make it to the conference.</p>

<p>I traveled to a few conferences, and when I got invited to a Software Testing conference in Malaysia, I couldn&#8217;t expect anything more 🙂 How wonderful it is to be able to attend a fantastic conference from your location 😍</p>

<p>AI is Everywhere, and this year there&#8217;s been a lot of hype around that topic. As a Tester, we need to learn about the tech and tools. So I dived deep and took many courses regarding AI and Machine Learning. I had a great time learning and that&#8217;s how the topic of &#8220;Prompt Engineering&#8221; picked my interest. The LLMs behind the AI systems are evolving. They might not be a replacement for humans, but they can assist you to <strong>SOME EXTENT</strong>. I realized that learning how to write efficient prompts makes a big change to the output from the AI Systems. So based on it, I gave a talk about it at this year&#8217;s TestFlix.</p>

<p>Ah, yes you read it right. After seeing all the above achievements, did you think Pricilla&#8217;s life was perfect? Oh no my friend! Nothing is perfect.</p>



<p>This year, I encountered my fair share of failures and glitches that made me question my abilities. But with each failure came a valuable lesson. Yes, trust me.</p>



<p>On the work front, there were a lot of changes in the hierarchy, ways of working which were a bit stressful and needed to be more adaptive. We all survived though. Fortunately, I have a great team, they were very supportive and caring ❤️</p>



<p>I was handling a lot of mental struggle, which made me unfit to focus and hampered my concentration. And yes some health issues, which made me motivated to lose a few pounds. I feel much better now 😍 and gearing up for 2024!!</p>



<h2 id="h-biggest-learnings"><span id="Biggest_Learnings"><strong>Biggest Learnings</strong></span></h2>



<p>As every year, 2023 gave and taught me so much.</p>



<p>In the ever-evolving world of <a href="https://testsigma.com/guides/software-testing/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">software testing</a>, the biggest learnings often extend beyond the lines of code. Testing is not just about finding bugs; it&#8217;s about building bridges between teams, fostering a culture of shared responsibility, and ensuring that the final product is usable. I learned the importance of usability and accessibility of the products, which made me learn and implement more about it.</p>



<p>Some things can wait, so no pressure. One at a time, and not overwhelm yourself. Even if not, it&#8217;s fine. I can be okay without knowing everything.</p>

<p>As the year comes to a close, I&#8217;m grateful for the victories, humbled by the failures, and inspired by the stories that molded my path. Reading about the layoffs and people losing jobs was so painful, and I am glad that I have a job and I love doing that ❤️ I tried to help many through my free mentoring classes, master classes, blogs, and talks.</p>

For a tester in specific, all skills learnt from day one can help reach their aims as well as carry it with them in every role they decide to switch to.&nbsp;</p>



<p>A tester’s role is beautiful, as it allows one to either be technical, be a tester with exceptional business acumen, or have both. Soft skills are really useful not just to a tester but to all tech roles as these are needed when convincing a team, bringing in change to a team, interviewing, being interviewed, or even presenting an idea to your team, etc. Let&#8217;s have a deep dive into what are the vital skills for a tester.</p>

<p>Testers will keep evolving their skills and their experiences if and when they find interesting offers in the market. However, sometimes, job specifications and interviewers look for specific skills. This does not mean that one should not apply for such role; one can apply and still get selected. It is not always about the certifications and professional boards you are connected to, but about how one is as a tester and how one can bring fresh ideas to the table, yet learn from the new company, too. Therefore, the message here is, that do not feel low when specifications mention specific skills; go ahead and make the most of it.</p>

Software Testing Skills Every Software Tester Must Have


<p>Working in an ever-growing industry of technology one cannot stay up to date with every single technology, application or coding skills at all times. Have you ever thought that you are not great at a certain task, or confused on how to complete your work, or have asked way too many questions to another colleague on how to complete your work? This is something we can all relate to, and this is the famous word you hear &#8211; theimposter syndrome.&nbsp;</p>

<p><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/overcoming-imposter-syndrome-tech-industry-felicia-boyd/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harvard Business Review</a> defines ” imposter syndrome as a feeling of inadequacy and self-doubt that can affect anyone regardless of their level of success or skill. <p>As a human being when we are in a new role, we want to be a perfectionist to either showcase our potential or just worry about getting a bad feedback. This can lead to worrying over small details and being very thorough, where one might not need to spend extra time.</p>



<p>Procrastination and Paralysis are where we think too much or plan too much before actually experiencing our next project/task/meeting. This then becomes an approach to many tasks and leads to not achieving much and spending too much time thinking.</p>



<p>People pleasing is one where one is aiming their best to make sure they please their team members all the time. This is not really a positive quality to have at all times as one may be a great communicator, empathetic, and diplomatic at work, however, this trait can cause destruction by leading to burnout.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Another way to overcome your thoughts that while through imposter syndrome is by keeping yourself busy; perhaps do a new course at work that could help you grow, do some mindfulness sessions(yoga, meditation); perhaps join a STEM group at work or play sports with your colleagues/friends &#8211; these are great ways to relax your mind and not overthink. Try to learn what triggers you and then see what solutions could protect you.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Your managers and leaders should also be trained to make the team members feel comfortable, for instance, by celebrating the achievements of their team members, taking the team out for lunch, and making sure the team feels happy in general. Small successes lead to big successes, and to be empathetic as a leader for your team members and those who work with you is a great positive step in your leadership style.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Something more to bear in mind is that leaders/managers/higher management can also have imposter syndrome, however, if the work provides a positive supportive environment, individuals can feel comfortable.</p>



<p>Record your wins always regardless of the size, big or small as they count a lot as your experience as well as serve as great feedback for you too. Yes, there are times one doubts themselves, but do not forget all the good work one puts in which weighs more than anything else.</p>



<p>Finally, one can focus on thinking about how they provide value to their work and team rather than thinking about how they are being perceived. Focus on what you have to do and help team members as this small contribution can bring more confidence in individuals.&nbsp;</p>

What I mean by this is that the environment that you are working in and the people you work with can cause you to think that you are lacking skills or not understanding the work. I have experienced this with some managers who are micromanaging and it has made me feel low as well as underskilled.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Other than that, sometimes you are pressured for a task which you may have understood little or not at all, which can also make one feel confused and under-experienced or doubting themselves. You have to remember that sometimes you can solve this situation by being upfront and honest that you do not have the needed skill or it&#8217;s not possible at the moment, for you. It can create a discussion or an argument, however, you have to remember you spoke up and said the truth and it needs to be respected.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Another example is when you are not celebrated for the work you are putting in &#8211; your team is providing excellent feedback on it, but the management does not see it enough to celebrate it. This easily can delve one into thinking they are not that good yet or feel puzzled.</p>



<p>Sometimes when working with many software testers, I have witnessed favoritism which is not fair. The other testers get put forward for projects that others may feel they should go for and get to do the “fun” activities whereas other testers just sit back and continue with their day to day tasks. If there are various testers in the team, aim to balance it out so all testers feel valued and celebrate all. Not all will showcase big achievements, so celebrate the small wins too.&nbsp;</p>
