# API Keys

> Generate an API key for the Arcus API, then disable, re-enable, or delete an existing key.

**An API key** authenticates calls to the Arcus by Testsigma API, which you can use to create projects, test cases, test runs, and test plans, and to execute them.

## Generate an API key

1. In the left navigation, go to **Settings > API Keys**.

2. Click **Generate New Key**.

3. In the **Generate Key** dialog, enter a **Key Name**.

4. Click **Generate**.

5. Copy the key.

Arcus shows the key once and never again, so a lost key has to be replaced with a new one. Store it as securely as a password, since it authorizes calls against your account.

## Manage existing keys

The **API Keys** page lists every key with its name, when it was last used, whether it is **Active** or **Inactive**, and who owns it.

Click the ellipsis icon (⋮) on a key for its actions:

- **Disable Key**: stops the key working, and moves it to **Inactive**. Shown on an active key.
- **Re-Enable Key**: puts an inactive key back into service. Shown on an inactive key.
- **Delete Key**: removes the key permanently.

Deleting a key can't be undone, and anything authenticating with it stops working. Disable the key first if you want to check what breaks before committing.
